Privacy Policy
Who we are
PlayDate is a dating app for adults 21 and over who love anime, cosplay and fan conventions. It is run by Tamase Financial ("PlayDate", "we", "us"), based in Maryland, USA.
This policy explains what information PlayDate collects, why, who it's shared with, and the choices you have. It applies to the PlayDate mobile app and joinplaydate.app.
Questions or requests: support@joinplaydate.app or 4039 Wilkens Ave, Baltimore, MD 21229.
Information we collect
We collect what you give us, what the app records as you use it, and the result of your ID check.
| Information | Where it comes from | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Email and password | You, at sign-up | Your password is stored only in encrypted (hashed) form; we can't see it. |
| Profile | You | First name, birthday, gender, who you want to see, bio, age and distance preferences, fandoms, and cons you're going to. |
| Photos | You | Up to 6 photos you upload. |
| Location | Your phone, with your permission | Your precise location while you use Discover, used to find people near you. |
| Activity | The app | Who you like or pass on, your matches, and your messages. |
| Safety records | You and the app | People you block or unmatch, reports you file (with a copy of the conversation), and reports about you. |
| ID verification result | Stripe | Whether your ID check passed and the date of birth on your ID. Stripe collects your ID images and selfie; PlayDate never receives them. |
| Device information | Your phone, with your permission | A push-notification token and your device type (iOS or Android), so we can send you notifications. |
We don't use advertising trackers, and we don't collect your contacts, camera roll (beyond photos you pick), or microphone.
ID verification and biometric data
To match or message, you must verify your identity through Stripe Identity. You photograph a government ID and take a live selfie in Stripe's secure page. Stripe compares your selfie with the photo on your ID. This face comparison uses biometric data (measurements of facial features).
- Who handles it: Stripe collects and processes your ID images, selfie and face data. PlayDate never receives your ID images, selfie or face measurements.
- What PlayDate receives: whether you passed, and the date of birth on your ID. We use that date to confirm you're 21 or older, and it replaces the birthday you typed. We also receive the name on your ID, use it once to make a one-way fingerprint (see "About fingerprints" below) so banned people can't verify again, and don't store the name itself.
- Consent: Stripe asks for your consent before the check starts. You can decline, but you won't be able to match or message without verifying.
- How long Stripe keeps it: Stripe says it deletes face (biometric) data within 1 year, and typically keeps ID images and details for 3 years, unless the law requires longer. See Stripe's ID verification FAQ and privacy policy.
- Never used for anything else: PlayDate doesn't use your ID or face data for advertising, and doesn't sell or share it.
How we use your information
We use your information only to run PlayDate and keep it safe:
- Show you people and show you to them. We match profiles by preferences, distance, shared fandoms and shared cons, and how recently people were active.
- Matching and chat. We create a match when two people like each other, and deliver your messages.
- Confirm everyone is a real adult. We check that each user is a real person aged 21 or older. The birthday on your verified ID replaces the one you typed.
- Safety. We review reports, act on blocks, and remove people who break the rules.
- Notifications. We tell you about new matches and messages if you allow notifications.
- Account emails. We send things like password-reset codes.
- Legal. We meet legal obligations and respond to valid legal requests.
We don't sell your information, and we don't use it for advertising.
How Discover chooses who you see
Discover uses simple, fixed rules, not a learning algorithm. It shows you verified people whose preferences and yours match: gender, age range and distance. People you've already liked, passed on or blocked are left out.
It then puts them in this order:
- People going to the same upcoming cons as you (each shared con counts the most)
- People who share your fandoms
- People who used PlayDate most recently
- People nearest to you
In Con Mode, during a con you're going to, Discover shows only people going to that con, wherever they live.
No automated decision bans or restricts accounts. The only automatic decision is the 21+ check on your verified ID. If you think it's wrong, contact support@joinplaydate.app and a person will review it.
When we read your messages
Your messages are private between you and your match. PlayDate staff don't read them, with two exceptions:
- When a conversation is reported. A report saves a copy of that conversation, and our safety team reads it to decide what to do.
- When the law requires it, such as a valid court order.
We don't scan messages automatically, and we don't use them for advertising. Messages are encrypted in storage and in transit, but not end-to-end, so PlayDate's systems can access them for these purposes.
What other users can see
Only verified users can see your profile, and only if your preferences match.
| Other users can see | Other users can never see |
|---|---|
| Your first name and age | Your email or password |
| Your photos and bio | Your exact location |
| Your fandoms | Your full birthday |
| Cons you share with them | Your ID images or ID details |
| Your distance, rounded up to the nearest kilometre | Who you passed on, blocked or reported |
| Messages you send them after you match | Your reports, or that you reported them |
Photos you upload can be opened by anyone who has their web link. Don't upload anything you want kept private.
Who we share information with
We share information only with the companies that run parts of PlayDate for us. They may use it only to provide their service to us.
| Company | What they do for PlayDate | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Hosts our database, photos and sign-in | Everything stored in PlayDate |
| Stripe | Checks your ID and selfie (Stripe Identity) | Your ID images, selfie and the details on your ID, which you send to Stripe directly |
| Resend | Sends account emails, such as reset codes | Your email address and the email's content |
| Expo | Delivers push notifications to Apple and Google | Your push token and the notification text |
We may also share information:
- When the law requires it, such as a valid subpoena or court order.
- To protect people, if we believe someone is at risk of serious harm.
- In a business change, if PlayDate is sold or merges. This policy would still apply to your information.
We never sell your information or share it for advertising.
Ticket links and other websites
PlayDate links to convention websites and ticket sellers such as Eventbrite. Some of these may be affiliate links: if you buy tickets through them, PlayDate may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you.
When you open one of these links, you leave PlayDate. That website's own privacy policy applies to anything you share there, including payment details. PlayDate doesn't receive your payment details.
How long we keep information, and deleting your account
We keep your information while your account is open. You can delete your account at any time in Profile → Delete account, or by request.
When you delete your account, we immediately and permanently delete:
- your profile and photos
- your likes, matches and blocks
- your messages, including in other people's chats
- your push-notification tokens
We keep a few things for safety, even after deletion:
| What we keep | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Reports about you, with the conversation copied when they were filed | So harassment can't be erased by deleting an account | 3 months after your account closes, or 1 year if you were banned |
| Reports you filed | To act on them and keep others safe | Until 3 months after the reported account closes, or 1 year if it was banned |
| If you're banned: a fingerprint of your email and of your verified ID | To stop banned people signing up again, even with a new email | 5 years from the ban |
| If you delete your account while a report about you is still open: the same fingerprints | To stop someone deleting and re-joining to dodge a report | 90 days |
| Your ID check record at Stripe | Stripe's own legal and fraud rules | Set by Stripe's privacy policy |
About fingerprints. A fingerprint is a one-way code made from your email, or from the name and date of birth on your verified ID, using a secret key. It can't be turned back into your email, name or birthday. We can only use it to recognize the same email or ID if it's used again. If you delete your account with no open reports about you, we keep no fingerprints.
Backups of our database may hold deleted information for up to 30 days before it's overwritten.
Inactive accounts. If you don't open PlayDate for 2 years, we'll email you a warning. If you still don't open the app within 30 days of that email, we delete your account the same way as if you'd deleted it yourself.
Your choices and rights
In the app, at any time, you can:
- edit your profile, photos, fandoms and cons in Profile
- unmatch, block or report anyone
- delete your account in Profile → Delete account
- turn off location or notifications in your phone's settings (Discover needs location to show people nearby)
By request, you can ask us to:
- send you a copy of the information we hold about you
- correct information that's wrong
- delete your information
- explain how we use it
Email support@joinplaydate.app from the address on your account. We'll reply within 45 days. We won't treat you differently for using these rights.
Depending on where you live, state laws such as Maryland's Online Data Privacy Act and California's CCPA may give you extra rights, including the right to appeal if we turn down a request. Your profile includes sensitive information (your sexual orientation can be inferred from who you want to see, and your precise location). We use it only to run the app, never for advertising.
Security
Your information is stored with encryption, sent over encrypted connections, and protected by access rules so users can only reach what they're allowed to. ID images stay with Stripe. No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affects your information, we'll tell you as the law requires.
Where your information is stored. PlayDate's database and photos are stored in the United States (Supabase, Oregon). Our service providers listed above may process information in the US or other countries, under their own privacy and security commitments. PlayDate is meant for people in the US.
Age requirement
PlayDate is only for adults 21 and over. Every user must pass an ID check before they can match or message. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 21. If we learn someone under 21 has an account, we delete it. See our child safety standards.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the effective date above. For important changes, we'll tell you in the app or by email before they take effect.
